Member News: New Switcher System at DTS

0

Douglas Technical Services is a contract production company supplying camera crews for single and multi-camera productions throughout the Pacific Northwest for national and international production firms, while fully producing corporate and individual projects for local and regional clients.

We have just updated our video mixing capabilities for mobile productions with a Blackmagic ATEM video switcher. This switcher has 4 HDMI and 4 SDI inputs and can effect between 6 sources with cuts, dissolves and wipes. No genlock is needed to or from sources, which allows the use of prosumer cameras. The unit is a one M/E system with color backgrounds, 2 channel still store, lumen or chroma keying, plus a downstream keyer. It can encode and record a H264 file and has HDMI and SD/HD SDI output. In one preview monitor, you can see all sources as well as preview and program out.

For pre-recorded or edited segments, the TD can roll and effect to & from the on-board FCP HD editing system and live sources. Titles can be stored for keying or keyed directly from the time-line.

In addition to the H264 recording, DTS has an XDcam digital recorder that records full 4:2:2 HD at 50 or 100 Mbps and can record IMX SD 4:2:2 at 50 Mbps. Simultaneously, the signal can be sent to a projector system for large screen projections.

To encode and stream a live event, DTS uses a Digital Rapids encoder that?s capable of multiple streams and records a H264 version at the same bit rate as the streamed version.

The editor, video switcher and encoding units are packaged in 2 portable rack units that easily transport into an event center for live production, projecting, recording and/or Webcasting.

If a production takes place at a location without a landline or fast enough Internet connection, (usually a dedicated T1 line is needed for streaming), DTS has one of the few KU band satellite uplink vehicles on the West Coast. All the production gear can go inside a venue for streaming or the gear can stay in the van for remote location productions. The data rate range is from 400 Kbps to 1.7 Mbps in one or both directions.

We can also supply Internet and telephone connections at any location using the satellite system. A production could have 1 or many phones, a stable Internet connection, all while streaming a live event.

We have streaming partners that handle the CDN services for world-wide coverage. In addition to using conventional streaming channels, we now stream through Facebook and have a Roku channel for viewing the Internet on television. Just think, your clients could be watching and communicating on Facebook in real time about the event. The new system has DVR type controls and viewers can now watch a live program from the beginning if they happen to start viewing late. The program is also archived for replay after the live event.

So in summary, an event could include 6 cameras or other sources (including Power Point), effect between them with keys, titles and edited segments, record in XDcam HD and 2 encoded H264 versions at different rates, project the program on large screens and Webcast the production over several channels, all while supplying telephone and Internet connections at any location in the city, by the beach, your favorite park, at your business, etc. Why fly family in for a wedding when you can send a live streamed version to them anywhere in the world.

DTS on location for CNN.

While covering the shooting at Mt. Rainier, WA for CNN recently, the KU Band Satellite System was used to supply telephone and Internet service. Forget cell phones, not even handheld satellite phones were getting out. Other reporters had to drive back to town to make their reports, while our reporter was in constant communications with Atlanta.

It demonstrates that when people work together change is possible. We hope that through this event we can empower individuals to make a difference in the lives others.

The film will be shown Thursday March 15th at the Wildish Theater, 630 Main Street in Springfield.  Doors open at 7:00 and the film will be shown at 7:30.  Tickets are on sale now at the ShelterCare website http://www.sheltercare.org/streetball/.

The funds raised through this event will support ShelterCare’s Homelessness Prevention Program (HPP).
